I'm a failure at drawing and painting ladies, seriously! How many do you see in my portfolio?... and that doesn't include ugly crones and mutated hags!

A while back I purchased some photo reference from Female Anatomy For Artist and here's my first attempt.. I'm quite pleased with the results but it doesn't really look anything like the model, lol. Not that that matters, getting those planes and tones close enough will make me happy :)

The Historian

My friend and colleague J.P.Moore is currently working on his next novel, entitled 'The Old God'. It's going to be a dark and mysterious tale, may be even Lovecraftian in nature.. hehehe. I know I'm looking forward to reading more.

Yet More Cthulhu

It's turning into a fetish.. I know...

So some of you might be familiar with this image, it's a re-work of a fairly old piece that I started well over a year ago. The original final piece had high contrast and colour but I was never totally happy with the result. So while I was low on work I looked back at previous saves of the painting and decided to go for less contrast/colour and whip in a bit of detail and kept the image monotone. Hopefully you like the result :)

I won't lie, this was a tough one, how to make green light look nasty, evil, alien? I'm not sure I pulled it off 100% but I'm pretty pleased with it considering, I hope Lovecraft is looking down on this and liking it :)

My Output is Slowing Down

Hey all,

My output has slowed down a hell of a lot recently, which some of you may have noticed, and there's a good reason for it. My dad, who is an absolute star, is dying of cancer so I'm spending a lot of time caring for him. Bless his heart, he doesn't want to go into a care home (and who the hell can blame him) , he wants to spend his time resting at home...

He's happy knowing what's coming and is a real trooper, he's a huge inspiration for me and how I live my life...

Dracula Shakes His Booty

I've been playing the the scratchboard tool in Painter 11 whenever I've had a chance and I feel I'm finally getting to grips with it. I've not changed any settings on the brush, apart from fiddling with the opacity as I go, so I'm finding it a very versatile brush for how I work in black and white.

Anyway, here's Dracula :)

Just Another WIP Of Purdy Squiggles

I'm sure I've said it before but I'll repeat it.. just because I can! :)

Generally when I paint my personal paintings, scribbles, sketches, etc, I have no set plan of what I'm going to create on the canvas, usually they're 'nothing paintings' without much story or context, sometimes that develops as I go. So with this current piece I used the same kind of automatic painting, just slapping colour down, red, grey/red, oranges and purples and eventually this thing started painting itself.

I can feel it calling for more eyes though, what do you think? ;)

I can't wait to dip into this one again, it's been great fun, although as a personal challenge I am going to have to force myself to have more than one figure/monster in one of these personal works at some point. ;)

I'd usually post these kinds of pieces on BeautifulFlesh but as this is work for a client and isn't a portrait I wanted to throw it up here.
Blue, I hate working in blue, or cyan, or whatever you want to call it, so I've been actively trying to use and improve my use of that set of cool colours in my work, with slow progress I think I'm starting to grasp some kind of sense out of using them.. or at least I hope so :D
I've also been experimenting with some flat brushes I created in Painter, you can see me make use of them in this image, and past visitors have probably spotted me slowly increase the use of them generally.

Anyway, enough rambling.. here's the zommer..

I've just returned from a week in Spain with the family, you know, I don't think I realized how much the break was really needed by us all. Sun, sea and .. well, beer in my case and mojito's for my wife, lemonade for the kids and the odd mojito for my motherinlaw... yes, I went on holiday with the inlaw!

'Mad' I hear you cry.. but strangely I get on really well with her.. she's a good ol' gal :)

And I can't complain, the heat got up to 38degrees where we were on the NE coast of Majorca... that's the life for me!

That's slightly hotter (cough) than in the UK, and the air over there seems to do my health some good.

Anyone want to pay for me to move over there? ;)

Anyway, we've been back a couple of days and I've been beavering away on work, between washing, ironing, cleaning and general dogsbody duties, and between all that I managed to dig out an old favourite of mine and re-work it...

So here we have SkinWalker...

Description: Lupine Vampire

“I am the caretaker of this school and you will do as I say!” Screamed Henry Wolfe at the top of his shrill voice.
The kids continued to pelt him with wet balls of paper, laughing hysterically at his purple face and wobbling cheeks. Once the pelting stopped they quickly ran off to get more ammunition, knowing full well that 'Old Wolfee' with his wide girth would never be able to catch them.
Henry stood there for a silent moment, dripping, his shoulders slumped and his head down.

“I hate children,” He grumbled to himself.

“Don't worry Mr Wolfe, I'll help you clean this up!” Chirped Britney Bishops.

Henry jumped at her voice, staring blankly at her, “No, you go on to class, Britney. Thanks anyway.”

The sound of the bell ripped through the silence between them, indicating the start of class.

“Oh, ok Mr Wolfe, I'll see you later!” She waved goodbye, smiled sweetly at him and cartwheeled down the corridor to class.

Henry stared after her, he was fuming inside. He shook his head and proceeded to clear the mess of wet mess that was soaking the floor, and his clothes.
As he was begrudgingly toiling away, Henry started thinking, thinking more than he had for a very long time indeed. And they weren't nice thoughts.

As far as he could see, the reason he was stuck in this dump of a school was down to Britney Bishops' stupid father. If Henry had his way things would be very different, very different indeed.

Henry himself would be headmaster, yes! And Britney's pathetic, useless father would be cleaning toilets for a living. Hah! He told himself that he had been very patient, and that it must be time….. surely he could get revenge now?
He grinned evilly to himself. “Shall I use the key again? Could he help me? It is getting a bit dangerous now, especially as he seems to be getting stronger and stronger each time I let him out. Hmmmmm.”

He picked up the last of the mess from the floor, stood up, straightened his aching back and stretched his arms towards the ceiling. Something caught his eye to his right and he turned towards it. The school noticeboard displayed a large poster gently flapping in the breeze, on it were faces of local missing children, lots and lots of them. Henry's cheeks and chin quivered and his eyes bulged. Quickly, he snatched at the poster, tearing it from the noticeboard and, screwing it up he stuffed it out of view into his garbage bag. He checked the surrounding corridors nervously for any students that were not in class and, acknowledging that he was alone, chuckled to himself and shuffled off towards the school basement.

The basement was dark and dank, the narrow stairs were caked in crusty lime and the pipes along the ceiling were covered in rust, spider webs and dripped a strange, dark liquid. A pungent smell of old socks and burned meat hung in the air of the dingy, long room. The solitary light bulb lit a small area above the open furnace that was at the foot of the stairs. The smell seemed to be emanating for the side of the room where, along one wall, a row of bulging sacks sat, barely visible in the dim light.

Henry double checked that nobody was coming down the stairs, he then bent down in front of the furnace and reached his arm inside, his brow glistened as he strained to reach his prize. There was a muffled clang and he pulled his arm out, almost tumbling over as he did so. Pushing himself up, he raised his hand closely to his face uncurling his fingers to reveal a small leather pouch tied a silk loop.
Despite his fat fingers and clumsy demeanour, Henry deftly untied the knot and emptied the contents of the pouch into his other hand. There in his palm sat a small golden key, the head was moulded into the shape of a howling wolf, the shaft decorated with twisting runes running all the way down to the two long, sharp fangs moulded into the key.
Holding it up in front of his wide-eyed face, it seemed to glow.
He quickly grabbed the shaft and stabbed the two fangs sharply into his neck! Just as quickly, he wrenched them out and threw the key across the room into the darkness, as he squealed in pain.
Henry began writhing and shaking violently, arms and legs convulsing so wildly they were barely distinguishable as limbs. One of his flailing limbs thrashed into several of the sacks, spilling the contents over the stained floor. Bleached skulls, bones, and chunks of rotten flesh skittered and slid about as he writhed like a madman on the floor. With gnashing jaws and frothing mouth, his teeth cracked and stretched into sharp glistening fangs, his face contorted and stretched forwards like a dog, causing a yelp to escape from his throat.
His eyes were turning a burning, deep red, large thick veins appeared on his neck and dull popping sounds could be heard coming from his neck and shoulders as his muscles grew, bunched and knotted into impossible positions and shapes. He hunched forward and his shirt exploded off his shoulders revealing a huge muscular back and bony spine.
Thick, wiry hair sprouted out from all over his body at an impossible rate and his hands and feet stretched impossibly long, each finger and toe ended in a dirty razor sharp claw. His breathing finally slowed as he knelt on the floor, head down, clawed hands resting on the floor, the process complete.

He looked up, slowly getting to his feet and, even standing slightly hunched over Henry was at least seven feet tall. He padded over to the small basement window, keeping well away from the sunlight shining through. He smiled to himself, bearing his wicked fangs.

“Time for revenge, sweet Britney!” He growled under his breath. “Tonight, on Lonely Hill you're gonna become just like me, little one. Let's see how Pappa Bishop copes with his precious angel of a daughter suddenly becoming, a little on the 'wild side'.”

He threw back his massive wolf-like head and laughed aloud, he then looked to the floor he sighed.

“I'm forever clearing up!”

Last Post of the Month

I often love to go back to my old paintings and drawings and give them another wave of paint/refinement. Sometimes I'm successful and I notice a vast improvement in my painting skills, other times it's just an 'ugh moment'. Whichever way it goes I find it a great exercise and an excellent gauge on how much my personal growth as an artist has come along.

The first half of this image was done a couple of years back, and at the time I thought I was doing really well, hell yeah I thought I could take on the world! But as is often the case I quickly came down to earth with a bang.. and fair enough! But I do have a sore arse now :)

The second half of this is the refinement of the same image which I'm really pleased with, but my wizened eyes and memory tell me to not get too excited any more, there's still a massive path to travel down before I'm even slightly at the point where I'd like to be artistically :)

Whether I get to that point in my life is up to me.. is it possible? Who the hell knows, lol

Anyway, here's another play with brushes in Painter 11, this time using the 'loaded palette knife'. Looking at how this brush works with blending and pressure I'll definitely be using this alongside my favourite artists oils.. in the future :)

EDIT: Oh I forgot to add that me using the loaded palette brush was thanks to Sam Nielson's post on The Art Centre Blog :)

I Think I Must Have A Thing For Monkeys And Apes

The title says it all.. here we have yet another monkeyman/apeman/uranguman painting/sketchathon thingymajig!

Actually this is probably a fluke, I actually really like how this piece is going which is a rare occurrence, so I may well carry on with it. It's about 15 mins work over a 20 second sketch, using Painter and an artists oil brush. I can't explain to ya how much I love the artists oils in Painter.. there's just something about them, and once my mind clicks(and it will click, even if it kills me!) on how to make use of them for the better in my work I'll, hopefully, level-up!

Anyway, here ya go...

The White Monkey Cometh

I've been meaning to post this for a long time but have only just managed to get the time to do it right now while the kids are out for 10 minutes.. phew! Easter holidays, wife working and freelancing do not make for lots of time to work!

Anyway, here's 'The White Monkey', nicely titled after reading Jon Hodgson posting somewhere about a great white ape..yeah, anyway.. when I get the chance I'll be working into this a little more!

The Book Told Me to!!

Here's another personal piece, I have no idea what's going on, who he is, where he's come from, or even what he is. I used the spare time to test out (yet another) new Artists Oils brush, and I'm loving the blending and dabbing capabilities of this one. It's definitely in my 'to use professionally' set now.

ArtRage Watercolour

Hey All,

Carrying on from the last post... I found this ArtRage Studio Pro watercolour sketch that I painted when I first purchased the software. It's worth clicking on it just to check the larger version.

The watercolour tool looks like to be a very powerful tool for those that can handle it, unfortunately I am not one of those people, but I do enjoy scribbling and sketching with it, as can be seen below.

It's a very interesting tool, I'd love to make more use of it especially for backgrounds and I can imagine it would be great for glazing, but I've not played with it enough to give any opinion... so, there was a useless post :)

Playing with ArtRage 3

I have a really cool job going on at the moment. Unfortunately I can't show them, bah! ;)

The two pieces that I've nearly completed are painted almost entirely using ArtRage . I've not really played with it much in the past due to sticking to the usual suspects 'PS' and 'Painter', but there are some spangly, shiny little whistles in that little piece of art software that are well worth the small price they ask.

The impasto effects he gets are truly beautiful to view.

So here's a modest splat I did this morning while awaiting feedback!

And here's a close up, just so you can see how slap happy I can be with the paint! :D

The Yoke

Ok, I've been far too silent for far too long on this blog of mine, so here's a little something to keep my online presence just about plodding along :)

I'm a huge fan of the ''Toothless podcast'' novel by J.P.Moore , so much so, that I contacted him last year and he commissioned me to do a few pieces of artwork for the podcast. Some of the images can be found on JP's Devart Gallery

Here is my version of The Yoke, one of the minor but important monsters within the novel.

I had a chat with JP recently and we decided we'd have a go at colouring/painting some of these monsters, with slight changes as we go. So here's The Yoke, updated but unfinished.. more stages to come.. er.. as usual, eventually! :)

Well, here's one I started almost exactly a year ago, give or take a few days. I did intend to finish it but work and life got well in the way, as it so often does. At the time I wanted to dig right into this painting as I thought it had a bit of potential. Looking at it now I should include more creatures in the branches, a few more plants and tree flowers would probably be cool too. I've got to make that far background recede a lot more too... all things to work towards :)

Demon Queen

So I've been playing with this new inking brush, the first few results of which were a bit touch and go. I've now managed to change the tablet settings and get the brush 'just right'.. and I'm loving it :)

So here's what I've just done, those of you that know me know that I have great trouble drawing the female figure.. so I'm pretty much happy with this image!

I know she's ugly, so luckily I dubbed her Demon Queen ;)

ChoW #148 - Unfinished

So in between work I do a fair bit of digital scribbling and as per the post below 'unfinished' paintings. I really do hate that I never seem to have enough hours in the day to finish much of what I do for personal work.. we need more zombies after all :)

Anyway, I had a bit of free time over the weekend, I haven't participated in a ChoW for ages so decided to have another go, even if I don't finish it before the deadline.. which just happens to be the case :)

For this challenge the idea was to create an alien archeologist named Teroth. Teroth visits earth looking for sentient beings and finds only the remains of the human race, he returns a century later to start the dig.

I just threw in the Sankara Stones as a nod to Indiana Jones. :)

So unfinished as this image is, here ya go :)

Everybody is out of the house this evening so I thought I'd take the time out and scribble something just for me. As per usual with my personal work I'll probably never get to finish it, but it was a fun piece to at least start!

I changed to colour settings on PS and Painter to Adobe, rather than Apple.. I quite like the difference and will probably stick to this preference :)

A new scribbley paint for this morning. I wasn't exactly sure where I was going with this portrait and tried a new colour setting in PS. The colour setting seems to have super-saturated the image in my browser, but it looks fine in PS and Painter.. I'd be interested to know if it looks iffy on your monitors, if ya have the time to make a comment! :)

So yeah, he uses far too much fake tan and has too many trips to the sunbed.. the fool! :)

While I had a bit of time I decided to practice using an oil brush I made, I quite like marks it makes, but I'm not sure I'm capable of painting a full image with it yet.. I'll just keep plugging along :)

A Kind Email About 'How to Draw and Paint Goblinoids' :)

I received this email quite a while back but due to and illness in the family (as regular readers will know about) I completely forgot about putting it up here!

So here it is..

I've been a professional performer since I was 10. I have taught an endless amount of classes and when I teach creativity to inspire, I display a method I have used for ages very similar. When I noticed your "random" table in back...
DO NOT ask my why I have never thought of that for my art! I only used it for performance art. Thanks Scott, you're a life saver.
Now my head is brimming with ideas.

I know... the chart is akin to the old D&D game tables. I actually used to do quite a bit of work for TSR before they sold.

Vampires.. the cover

So here's the official cover painting for my new instructional art book entitled 'Learn to Draw & Paint Vampires'!
Once I have the trade dress sample I'll whack that up here too :)
The book is scheduled to be released around next Summer, published by D&C and Impact.

I personally would've liked to rough this guy up a bit, tears in clothing, scars etc.. but they wanted him nice and clean.

Well this is definitely worth a post. I’ve been so busy I’ve not been able to post much of anything on my website, for quite a while now. There are lots of reasons, being too busy with my second book, but also because my step-son has been ill, suffering from cancer.

Well, we finally got some great news on Friday, his scans that he had a few days before came up clear! It seems that he’s winning and he is in good health!

Wow what a huge weight off of everyone’s shoulders, especially his shoulders and his mum’s.

Obviously this isn’t the end, there are going to be more tests and we have a another consultant appointment next week, this I guess is where we’ll find out what the next steps are.

So anyone and everyone that reads this blog, please keep your fingers crossed for the next 10-15 years or so
